12/28/2023 0 Comments Dwarf fortress stress modI think it would require "perfect" play which the vanilla UI and management systems make prohibitively difficult, but even with mods would make planning a massive time sink. I'm trying to figure out what the assumptions are in treating it as a broken system, because I think an almost inevitable failure rate may be by design, though still theoretically correctable, just not practically in the vast majority of cases. It's my primary concern with the game, even if it doesn't impact me so directly. None of that really matters, though, because I'm not remotely the average player, and as a mod here and elsewhere, I see a lot of people struggling. It's also not nearly as fun as, say, 0.44.09. I hesitate to quantify the losses, but it's low. I play with Therapist and minimal DFhack interventions, and I do pretty well because I incorporate much of the advice and science from the forum, abandon the surface early, and use engineered traps like drowning chambers and deep spike pits to deal with sieges (no dwarf ever sees the bodies or, usually, the invaders.)Įvery once in a while I get a dwarf that's clearly a lost cause, or I miss something that starts a downward spiral, (lately necromancer nonsense,) even with what I'd say is a very safe (I think it would bore a lot of players without my attraction to "pretty" forts,) and a level of play that's required a big time investment. So I would be very careful about calling something broken, not because there are better players, but because there is so much room for personal improvement. I think this game has one the highest skill ceilings in any game due to the depth of simulation. Maybe I should have micromanaged dwarves to not enter rain multiple times, or focus on their needs, or be available to speak to the mayor, etc. I also don't know how I could possibly know that because there are so many variables involved. But maybe I just haven't reached an "unsolvable" stress problem that kills my fort. From a survival standpoint, so far, I have solved stress. Right now I deal with it by sending problematic dwarves to be killed by a vampire and get more migrants and babies than I do lose dwarves to stress. Is stress supposed to always be a solvable problem? I don't actually know yet. The question is, what is easy and what is fair? There are players who do not want to see a game become easier while others just want the game to be fair. Instead the players need to relay experience, and the devs need to determine if the results are as designed.
